Abstract

Hypertension is one of the non-communicable diseases that remains a public health problem with an increasing prevalence and the potential to cause cardiovascular complications. The management of hypertension can be carried out through pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches, one of which is Slow Stroke Back Massage (SSBM).This study aims to determine the effect of SSBM intervention on reducing blood pressure in elderly patients with hypertension. The research design used was a case study with the subject, Mrs. S, aged 70 years, who had hypertension with an initial average blood pressure of 137/71 mmHg. The SSBM intervention was conducted for three consecutive days with a duration of 10-15 minutes per session. The measurements showed a decrease in blood pressure after the intervention, with the average reducing to 130/71 mmHg.The patient also reported a reducation in headaches, improved sleep quality, and decreased anxiety. These findings are in line with previous studies showing that SSBM can stimulate relaxation, vasodilation, and reduce sympathetic nerve activity, thereby effectively lowering blood pressure. Thus, SSBM can be recommended as a non-pharmacological therapy to help control blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
